Don’t have a Walmart account? Good luck setting up your Vizio TV

Vizio parent company Walmart has confirmed a consequential change to its product offering strategy that’ll impact certain upcoming models within its smart TV lineup. The big box retail giant, which acquired Vizio in December 2024, has confirmed to Ars Technica that “select” new Vizio television sets will ship with mandatory Walmart account sign-ins during the setup process, with this same requirement extending to the access of some smart TV functions themselves.

“Customers who already have an existing Vizio account are being given the option to merge their Vizio account with their Walmart account. Customers with an existing Vizio account can opt out by deleting their Vizio account,” a Walmart spokesperson confirmed in a statement to Ars Technica.

Unfortunately, there’s no confirmation of which Vizio TV models will be impacted by this policy change, or when precisely it’ll roll out to new devices within the Vizio ecosystem. The Walmart spokesperson went on to tell Ars Technica that mandatory Walmart sign-ins are “designed to respect consumer choice and privacy, with data used in aggregated, permissioned, and compliant ways,” but details are still relatively murky at this time.

Goodbye Vizio accounts, hello Walmart accounts

Walmart purchased Vizio back in late 2024

If you’re in the market for a new smart TV and have Vizio-branded models on your radar, Walmart just threw quite the potential wrench into the picture. For some, signing in with a Walmart account is unlikely to factor into the TV purchase-making decision, while others will undoubtedly raise concerns over privacy and ad-tracking.

It appears that Walmart wants to leverage Vizio and its ad-subsidized smart television division as a facilitator for ad tracking and analytics, which makes sense considering the former’s retail-focused business model.

It’s worth noting that Vizio TVs, which run the Linux-based Vizio OS operating system, have already required a Vizio account sign-in since mid-2024 (via Ars Technica) — several months prior to Walmart’s acquisition of the company. The transition to a Walmart login, then, appears to be a logical next step in consolidating the retailer’s influence over the Vizio brand and product portfolio.
