Old Fashioned Banana Pudding Recipe (Southern Classic)

This Old Fashioned Banana Pudding is made from scratch and is one of our most popular recipes. It’s a classic for a reason! Make this one; you won’t be disappointed.

Banana Pudding made with meringue on a plate.

Why You’ll Love This Old Fashioned Banana Pudding

We love this classic because, in our opinion, homemade is better! Many people make banana pudding with instant pudding, but we really feel that making this from scratch is the only way. If you have followed our site for any amount of time, you know we don’t make every dish from scratch. My Nannie always made this one, and now Mom does, and it never lasts long. Vanilla Wafers, homemade vanilla pudding, bananas, and topped with a delicious meringue will take you right back in time!

Can I use Cool-Whip?

Many people are not fans of meringue; if you are in that category, you can use Cool Whip in place of it. We haven’t had it that way in years but it will still be good. If you haven’t tried it with the meringue, I urge you to try it. You will probably love it.

Why is my custard runny?

If you find that your custard is too runny, two things happened: you didn’t cook it long enough for it to thicken, or you didn’t have the heat high enough. So be sure to continue stirring because it will burn, but you want it to thicken.

How ripe are the bananas?

We like to use bananas that are ripe but not overly ripe. No green on the peel but not brown either. It’s a fine line but overly ripe with make things soggy quickly.

Old Fashioned Banana Pudding

Judy Yeager

This Old Fashioned Banana Pudding is a recipe your Grandmother probably made since it is 100% made from scratch.

Prep Time 20 minutes

Cook Time 20 minutes

Total Time 40 minutes

Course Dessert

Cuisine American

  • 4 bananas peeled and sliced
  • Vanilla wafers (I use about 50 wafers to make this pudding)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup regular or 2% milk
  • 1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring

Meringue for Pudding

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
  • In a medium bowl, slice bananas and sprinkle with lemon juice to keep them from turning black.

  • In a 2 quart casserole dish layer the vanilla wafers and bananas. (I use 10 of the wafers to go around the side of the bowl just because I think it is pretty this way).

  • In a saucepan on top of the stove with a whisk mix together the sugar, salt, flour, egg yolks, regular and evaporated milk. Cook on medium heat, stirring continuously with whisk, about 7 or 8 minutes until thickens. (It will burn very easily so be sure to stir) Remove from stove and stir in vanilla flavoring. Pour over wafers and bananas.

Instructions for Meringue

  • Beat egg whites on high until stiff and peaks form. Add sugar and vanilla and beat into egg whites. Spread over pudding and bake in 350 degree oven until browned. (I have just put it under the broiler until it browns that way, too).

This recipe makes around 8-10 servings.
