This is what happens if you leave an Apple TV plugged in 24/7

The Apple TV 4K is arguably the king of media streamers for the general public. Some diehards still use the Nvidia Shield, and I’m sure a few casual viewers might choose a Roku or Google TV, particularly if they’re using Amazon Alexa or Google Home for smart home integration. But the Apple TV tends to be the fastest of them all, and the least encumbered by ads or privacy concerns. If you’ve got an iPhone, Apple Watch, or iPad, it also offers some special perks, like a software remote pop-up.

Unlike some competing devices, it’s pretty explicit that an Apple TV is meant to be plugged in 24 hours a day. But are there any downsides to leaving it on all the time? Should you periodically shut it down or reboot it? And are there any special advantages to a 24/7 media set-top? I’ll tackle all of those topics in this guide.

I should add that most of what you read here applies not just to every generation of the Apple TV 4K, but to the various high- and low-end variants Apple has put out. I’ll specify any differences when necessary.

What happens if you leave an Apple TV 4K on 24/7?

Power consumption, background processes, and more

First off, know that it’s not running full-tilt all the time. By default, it goes into a dormant state after about 15 minutes. You can extend or disable this delay by going to Settings – > General -> Sleep After, but I’d actually recommend leaving things as-is. Anything longer is usually a waste of power, and the tvOS screensaver should kick in beforehand, giving you plenty of time to snap back to your movie if you were out grabbing snacks, or a package off the front porch.

Apple’s hardware has gradually become more power-efficient over the years, which stands to reason with smaller die sizes on chips, and the ability to accomplish the same tasks in less and less time. The 2022 model is estimated to consume about 0.8W on standby, according to FlatpanelsHD, and between 1.9 and 2.3W when streaming video. The highest consumption you’ll see is between 2 and 6W for gaming — which is pretty impressive, considering that the Apple TV can run native 3D games no other media streamer is capable of.

Let’s do some quick math. If you streamed video for about 4 hours every day, leaving the device on standby the rest of the time, it would consume about 27Wh per day, or roughly 10kWh per year. That might sound like a lot for a media streamer, but the annual power bill for this would likely be less than $2, assuming an average rate of $0.16 per kWh. Chances are, a gaming PC would consume more energy in one evening than an Apple TV would in two to four months.

A variety of background processes are always running, even when tvOS is in standby. If automatic updates are on, it’s periodically checking for app and OS updates, and installing them during overnight downtime. You can change this behavior or force an OS update by going to Settings -> Apps and/or Settings -> System -> Software Updates. Note, though, that Apple rarely updates tvOS, usually waiting until there’s a new version of iOS to go with it.

There’s actually a lot more going on, mainly in the smart home arena. It’s not only on alert for AirPlay audio and video casting, but serving as a Home Hub for Apple’s HomeKit framework. This means it manages automations and enables remote access — so if you use other HomeKit accessories at all, you should probably leave your Apple TV active 24/7 unless you’ve got a HomePod that can take its place.

All Apple TV 4Ks serve as controllers for Matter, a universal pairing standard for smart home accessories. More advanced models also act as “border routers” for Thread, a low-power radio standard similar to Zigbee or Z-Wave. Although there’s no particular reason to, you can’t turn these functions off easily. The only options are to sign your device out of iCloud, remove it from Apple Home, or power down, none of which are really desirable.

The biggest benefit of leaving an Apple TV on is a simple one: quick access. If you shut down completely, tvOS has to go through the full boot process again when you’re ready to watch something. On standby, even a 2017 model can be ready in a few seconds.

Are there any downsides to leaving an Apple TV 4K on all the time?

Nothing major to speak of

The Apple TV 4K's tvOS 26 on a TV.

There’s nothing truly serious. As I mentioned, the hit to your power bill is marginal, far less than many other devices in your home. That actually makes heat the more significant issue, since it inevitably shortens the lifespan of any product. The news is still good here, however — unless you’re playing a high-intensity 3D game, an Apple TV is unlikely to feel anything more than mildly warm to the touch. I have a 2017 model that’s been humming along without any problems, and very little time powered off.

If there’s anything close to a serious risk, it’s that without a reboot, an Apple TV can’t completely clear its system cache, used to speed up common functions. Normally, clearing this cache isn’t a big deal — a certain amount of management is done automatically, and I rarely have any speed complaints. But “junk” data can nevertheless accumulate over time, leading to modest performance hits and (hypothetically, at least) glitches. There’s usually no need to power down your device, though — just going to Settings -> System -> Restart should do enough.

One concern I want to dispel is the idea that leaving it on might constitute a privacy or security risk. Some apps can perform limited tracking, but even this can be disabled, and Apple’s own Siri and analytics tracking is opt-in rather than opt-out. There’s also no Automatic Content Recognition ( ACR), which some rival devices use to track and monetize everything you watch. Apple would love it if you subscribed to its online services, but it doesn’t need to make money from ads — it turns a profit off the hardware alone.

What about the upcoming 2026 Apple TV?

A bunch of unknown unknowns

An updated Apple TV set-top has been rumored since late 2025, but has so far failed to materialize. Often I see it suggested that news outlets are getting their facts wrong, but if you’ve been paying attention to the reports, there’s an obvious reason for the delay — Apple wants the next version to ship with Apple Intelligence, and the company is smack in the middle of fixing that tech by integrating Google Gemini. It could, conceivably, ship a new product now and update tvOS later, but that would result in a less-than-impressive debut, especially without products like an anticipated “HomePad” hub to flesh out the ecosystem.

None of this should affect leaving your Apple TV running. Apple is simply adopting Gemini models, so it’s not like tvOS will start feeding data to Google servers. If anything, things should get even more efficient, thanks to a newer generation of iPhone processor taking the place of the A15 Bionic.
